What an after-shave splash does
An after-shave splash is the alcohol-based finishing step in a wet-shave routine. Three things it’s built to do:
- Antiseptic / antimicrobial. The alcohol kills the surface bacteria a shave can introduce through micro-cuts, particularly important for shavers prone to ingrown hairs or razor bumps.
- Astringent close. Alcohol contracts skin pores and the small surface vessels just opened by the warm lather for a comfortable post-shave feel.
- Scent throughline. The same fragrance compound from the shaving soap continues into the splash, so the scent doesn’t disappear at the rinse. Wears 2–4 hours typically.
If your skin doesn’t tolerate alcohol after shaving (eczema, rosacea, very dry skin types), the alcohol-free toner is the alternative finishing step. Some shavers layer splash THEN balm for both the antiseptic close AND the all-day conditioning.
How to use
After rinsing the lather, pat skin mostly dry. Cup 5–8 ml of splash in your palm, rub palms together briefly to break the alcohol bite, then press onto skin (don’t rub aggressively). Some shavers prefer slap-application for the bracing effect; others prefer the gentler press. The alcohol stings briefly, then evaporates within 30 seconds, leaving the fragrance behind.

Who Jamestown Gentleman After Shave Splash is not for
Honest limitations:
- Sensitive / very dry skin. Alcohol-based splashes can sting and dehydrate. The Jamestown Gentleman toner is the alcohol-free alternative for sensitive types.
- Fragrance-sensitive skin. Jamestown Gentleman carries a real fragrance load. Our unscented Bare Naked line (splash included) is the alternative.
- Strict ingredient minimalists. Each post-shave product has its own preservative system; if you want the shortest possible ingredient deck, balms are the simplest.

There was one in particular that blew me away-- Jamestown Gentleman. I didn't know what it was called when I tried it, and I didn't know anything about the scents. I just knew it as test #1, but I knew that I loved it the moment I put it on. I treasured the little vial he had sent me, using each drop judiciously. The scent itself is gorgeous and quite manly. It's complex, and to my novice nose, it's hard to pick out anything specifically. I can pick out bergamot, lavender, and what I can only imagine is the tobacco flower. The menthol gives a wonderful cooling sensation when you use it. It's quite soothing and is great after any shave. If I had to try to define the "mood" of the scent, I'm picturing Django in Django Unchained when he's looking totally badass in his blue suit riding through the tobacco field. It's manly, playful, sexy, cool, and totally awesome. I love this scent, and it lasts for about five or six hours. It makes your face feel great without being harshly alcoholic. When I first picked this up I'll admit I wasn't impressed but after letting this age for a few months it has become one of my favorite scents of all time. It's excellent during these hot summer months as it mingles and mixes well with my natural chemistry on the dry down. A bonus is the pleasing scent lasts and doesn't simply fade out after a few hours. To me Jamestown Gentleman is reminiscent of an old southern garden at night. I imagine a young couple strolling along a Victorian era street by gaslight passing flower gardens and tobacco fields and a fragrance similar to Jamestown Gentleman dancing in the midnight breeze. If you're looking for something unique and out of the ordinary but with a comforting and somehow familiar scent grab a few bottles of this. Anthony Z.
