What is La Supérieure?
La Supérieure is Wholly Kaw's artisan shave cream line — three current scents (DFS 2021, Peach Karma, Dulci Tobacco), built on the same conditioning ingredients as the soap line but pre-hydrated for a faster, more forgiving lather. Here's what each one is and who it's for.
La Supérieure is Wholly Kaw's artisan shave cream line — a small, curated set of scents released alongside the much larger shaving soap catalog. Three SKUs are current: DFS 2021 (Tobaccowala), Peach Karma, and Dulci Tobacco. All three are pre-hydrated soft creams that load and lather faster than a soap puck while using the same conditioning ingredient stack — saponified tallow, lanolin, shea butter, kokum butter, glycerin. The line is calibrated for shavers who want soap-quality lather without the soap learning curve.
Why a cream line alongside the soap line
Wholly Kaw built its reputation on tallow-and-donkey-milk shaving soaps with deep fragrance development — over 60 scent profiles across the Siero, Crème Fraîche, and vegan bases. Soap demands precision: water balance during the brush load, technique during the build, patience as a new user learns the medium. The lather rewards mastery, but the runway is real.
La Supérieure exists for the shavers who want the conditioning quality of a Wholly Kaw soap with the ease of a cream. The fragrance work is the same — perfumery rather than off-the-shelf scent oil. The base swaps the puck's harder saponified-fat structure for a soft, pre-hydrated paste that lathers in 20 seconds with a brush. The result lands closer to a classic English shaving cream (Truefitt & Hill, Trumper, Taylor of Old Bond Street) than to a drugstore tube.

The three current scents
DFS 2021 (Tobaccowala)
A tobacco-citrus-spice-amber composition. Opens bitter-spicy with citrus, then tobacco threads through from start to finish. Ginger spice in the background adds warmth. The base is a woody amber that holds the structure together. Originally a 2021 limited release tied to Movember (men's health awareness month), DFS 2021 stayed in the catalog because the scent kept selling. The cream version is the lighter-weight format of the same fragrance available in the soap line — better for warm-weather wear, easier for everyday rotation.
Available at the La Supérieure DFS 2021 PDP.
Peach Karma
A juicy, soft-fruit fragrance built around ripe peach. Less common in the men's shaving category, where most fragrance development trends woody, spicy, or aquatic. Peach Karma reads playful and modern — wearable year-round, particularly good in spring and early summer. The cream format suits the lighter scent profile better than soap would, which is part of why this release went to La Supérieure rather than the soap line.
Available at the La Supérieure Peach Karma PDP.
Dulci Tobacco
A sweeter tobacco take than DFS 2021. Less spicy, more honeyed-tobacco. The composition uses sweet tobacco absolute with vanilla and amber underneath, giving it a comforting, dessert-adjacent character rather than the classic-aromatic register of DFS 2021. Best for cool weather and evening wear. Also available in the soap line; the cream version is for shavers who like the scent but want the easier lather.
Available at the La Supérieure Dulci Tobacco PDP.
The formulation
La Supérieure ships in 5-ounce screw-top tubs. The base is glycerin-forward (humectant for skin hydration) with saponified tallow, lanolin, kokum butter, shea butter, and a curated short fragrance load. No menthol, no synthetic camphor, no sulfate surfactants. Vegan options are not currently offered in the cream line — the soap line carries the vegan format for shavers who need it.
The lather profile sits between a classic English tube cream and a Wholly Kaw soap. Denser and slicker than the English tubes (more fat per ounce), looser and faster-building than the soap pucks. Two passes per shave is comfortable; a heavier load supports three passes for shavers who go after stubborn areas multiple times.
How long a tub lasts
A 5-ounce tub of La Supérieure runs about 2 to 3 months of daily shaves. Cost-per-shave lands in the $0.20 to $0.30 range, depending on how heavily you load the brush. The soap line is cheaper per shave (6 to 9 months on a 4-ounce puck) but requires more setup time per shave. For a working shaver who wants both — the soap on weekends, the cream weekday mornings — one tub of cream and one tub of soap is a typical rotation.
Who La Supérieure is for
- Wholly Kaw soap shavers who want a faster weekday option without leaving the brand's fragrance ecosystem.
- New wet shavers who want soap-quality lather while they learn brush technique. Start on a cream, transition to soap once the rest of the kit is dialed in.
- Travel-heavy shavers. Cream tubs survive checked bags better than soap pucks and don't sweat or split with temperature swings.
- Hard-water shavers. Cream is more forgiving of mineral content than soap, which can struggle to lather in hard-water cities.
What La Supérieure isn't
It isn't a sensitive-skin product line specifically. Three fragrance-forward scents work for most skin but won't be the right call for very reactive skin. For that profile, the Wholly Kaw Sensitive Skin Shaving Cream (a separate product, fragrance-free with green tea and beta-carotene) is the better entry point.
It also isn't a full replacement for the soap line. Three scents versus 60+ is not the same playing field. La Supérieure complements the soap line; for shavers who want fragrance variety, soap is where the range lives.
Pairing with aftershave
Each La Supérieure scent has a matching aftershave splash, toner, or balm in the broader Wholly Kaw catalog where available. DFS 2021 and Dulci Tobacco both have matching aftershave products. Peach Karma is a cream-only release at the moment. For full-day fragrance carry, the matching aftershave is the cleanest pairing; for skin recovery focus, see the alcohol-free aftershave guide for product selection.
Frequently asked questions
What is La Supérieure?
La Supérieure is Wholly Kaw's shaving cream line — three current scents (DFS 2021, Peach Karma, Dulci Tobacco) built on the same conditioning ingredient stack as the Wholly Kaw soap line, but pre-hydrated as a soft cream rather than a hard puck. Faster to lather, easier for new shavers, similar fragrance and lather quality to the soap line.
Is La Supérieure made by Wholly Kaw?
Yes. La Supérieure is the in-house cream line, hand-poured in small batches alongside the shaving soap line in Wholly Kaw's New Jersey workshop. Same ingredient sourcing, same perfumery work, same quality control. Not a licensed brand.
How many La Supérieure scents are there?
Three are currently in production: DFS 2021 (also called Tobaccowala — a tobacco-citrus-spice-amber composition), Peach Karma (juicy soft-fruit), and Dulci Tobacco (sweet honeyed-tobacco). The line is intentionally curated rather than expansive — fewer scents per release, each chosen specifically for the cream format.
Is La Supérieure cream the same as the matching Wholly Kaw soap?
Same fragrance, different format. Both DFS 2021 and Dulci Tobacco exist in both soap and cream form — same scent composition, but the cream is pre-hydrated and lathers faster while the soap is denser and lasts longer. Pick by lather preference and time-per-shave, not by fragrance.
How long does a tub of La Supérieure last?
A 5-ounce screw-top tub lasts roughly 2-3 months of daily shaves, depending on how heavily you load the brush. Per-shave cost is in the $0.20-$0.30 range. The soap line lasts longer per ounce; the cream's edge is build speed, not longevity.
Does La Supérieure come in a vegan version?
Not currently. The cream line uses saponified tallow in the base. Wholly Kaw's vegan format lives in the soap line — every soap scent is offered in a fully vegan version built on shea, kokum, and mango butters.
Is La Supérieure good for sensitive skin?
Reasonably gentle, but not specifically formulated for sensitive skin. The base avoids sulfates and menthol but does carry fragrance. For very reactive skin, Wholly Kaw's separate Sensitive Skin Shaving Cream (fragrance-free, green tea + beta-carotene) is the safer choice. See the sensitive-skin shaving cream guide for product selection.
What's the best way to lather La Supérieure?
Scoop a hazelnut-sized amount onto a damp synthetic brush. Smear in the brush briefly, then build directly on the face for 20-30 seconds, adding small amounts of water as needed. Aim for dense, glossy lather rather than big visible bubbles. La Supérieure is more forgiving of rushed technique than a hard soap puck, but the brush is still required for full performance.
