Triethyl citrate is one of those ingredients that shows up in a deodorant, a food coating and a polymer datasheet, and looks out of place in at least two of the three. Citric acid has three carboxylic acid groups. Attach an ethyl group to each one and you get triethyl citrate. That single change matters more than it sounds: citric acid is a water-soluble solid that is acidic the moment it dissolves, while the triester is an oily liquid that is not acidic as supplied.
Why deodorant formulators reach for it
Fresh sweat is close to odourless. Body odour is a second-order effect: skin bacteria metabolise components of sweat, and the smaller volatile compounds released in that process are what you actually smell. That leaves a formulator two obvious routes and one less obvious one.
- Block the sweat. This is the antiperspirant route, usually an aluminium salt. In the United States that makes the product a regulated drug, not a cosmetic.
- Raise the pH until bacteria struggle. This is the baking soda route. It works, and it is also why baking soda deodorants are a common source of underarm irritation: skin surface pH is commonly reported in the region of 4.7 to 5.75, and a baking soda solution sits well above that.
- Interrupt the breakdown itself. This is where triethyl citrate comes in.
The mechanism usually described is that skin esterases hydrolyse the ester, releasing citric acid at the surface, which lowers local pH slightly and slows the enzyme activity driving the odour reaction. Note what that description does and does not say. It describes a proposed mechanism for an ingredient. It is not a promise about a finished product, and how well any given formula performs depends on concentration, the rest of the formula and the person wearing it.

What it is not
It is not an antiperspirant ingredient. It does not plug sweat ducts and it is not intended to reduce how much you sweat. A product built on triethyl citrate leaves perspiration alone and addresses odour, which is a genuine difference in what the product is for, not a marketing distinction.
It is also not the same as citric acid on an ingredient list. If you see citric acid, that is usually there to adjust pH. The triester behaves differently and is there for a different reason.
