Geosmin smells like wet earth after rain: damp soil, a freshly dug garden bed, beetroot skin, the cool air inside a root cellar. It is earthy, mineral, and slightly musty, with none of the sweetness of patchouli or the smoke of vetiver. It is the molecule most responsible for the earthy part of petrichor, the smell that rises off dry ground when the first rain hits it.

What geosmin actually smells like

Pronounced jee-OZ-min. The name comes from the Greek geo (earth) and osme (smell), coined in 1965 by the biochemists Nancy Gerber and Hubert Lechevalier.

Why geosmin smells the way it does

Geosmin is a small bicyclic alcohol, C12H22O, produced by soil bacteria, chiefly Streptomyces, and by several blue-green algae. Living soil is full of these organisms, so their scent is effectively the scent of soil itself. When raindrops strike dry, porous ground they trap tiny pockets of air that burst upward as aerosols carrying material from the soil into the air. That mechanism was demonstrated with high-speed imaging by Joung and Buie in 2015, and it is why you smell rain on the ground rather than in the rain itself.

Geosmin also builds up in surface water when blooms of the same organisms die back, which is why communities on surface-water supplies periodically get muddy-tasting tap water, and why most people have smelled geosmin in a glass without knowing its name.

Geosmin vs petrichor

They are related but not the same thing. Petrichor is the whole smell of rain on dry ground. The word was introduced in 1964 by the Australian researchers Isabel Bear and Richard Thomas, who found that oils from plants accumulate on dry soil and rock during a dry spell and are released when moisture arrives. Geosmin is one ingredient of that smell: the earthy, soil-like part contributed by the bacteria in the soil. Petrichor is the composition; geosmin is a note within it.

Why humans smell geosmin so well

The human nose is extraordinarily sensitive to geosmin. Reported detection thresholds run from about 5 to 400 parts per trillion, and in water as low as 0.006 micrograms per litre. For scale, a shark detects blood at about one part per million, so on that comparison the human nose is orders of magnitude more sensitive to geosmin than a shark is to blood. One common explanation is that ancestors who could find water and fertile ground by smell had an advantage; Wikipedia's summary of the literature calls this "not conclusive", and so do we. A 2022 study in Applied and Environmental Microbiology found that soil nematodes actively avoid geosmin, and proposed that it works as a warning signal, a way for Streptomyces to advertise that it is not good to eat.

The practical consequence for fragrance is that geosmin is dosed in traces. A few parts per trillion reads as rain on earth. Push it higher and it tips into musty and cellar-like.

Known as the smell of earth after rain, geosmin is an odorous terpene detectable by humans at picomolar concentrations. We theorized that geosmin was an aposematic signal used to indicate the unpalatability of toxin-producing microbes, discouraging predation by eukaryotes. Consistent with this hypothesis, we found that geosmin altered the behavior of the bacteriophagous nematode Caenorhabditis elegans.

Geosmin in fragrance

Perfumers use geosmin as a single aroma molecule for a wet-earth or after-rain effect that natural materials cannot quite reproduce. The Good Scents Company entry rates its odour strength as high and recommends smelling it at a 1% dilution or less; the same entry notes that "traces in a fragrance can give you a unique effect and greatly increase diffusion", that it lasts about 68 hours on a smelling strip, and that the IFRA guideline caps it at 0.05% of the fragrance concentrate. Soap is on its list of typical applications. In other words, it is used sparingly, as a trace accent under a larger structure rather than as a lead note.

Does geosmin smell good?

Ask two people and you will get two answers, and both are right. In the air after a storm, most people find it among the most pleasant smells there is.
