Loading Jamestown Gentleman is one of the firmest soft soaps I’ve used. I bloom just about everything, so Jamestown Gentleman was no different. It loaded into my TGN finest quite easily. It’s a relatively thirsty soap, but it works best if you start a little dry, then gradually add more and more water towards the end. In fact, when you believe you’ve added enough water, add a little more. Wholly Kaw seems to reach an optimum lather at this point. Adding the majority of the water on the back end seems to be a characteristic unique to this soap. When reading other reviews, if I see a complaint about Wholly Kaw, it’s usually with regard to lackluster post-shave. This is not my experience at all. I find it quite moisturizing, and it’s easily within my top 5 soaps for post-shave feel (Saponificio Varesino Beta 4.1, Martin de Candre, RazoRock Santa Maria del Fiore, Dapper Dragon, Stirling). I suspect this discrepancy is related to the users’ neglecting to use a little more water and specifically on the back end. I’m a head and face shaver, and I always start with my head. I prefer my head shaves to be pillowy, but definitely slick and protective. Then for my face I prefer the lather to be dense and slick. Wholly Kaw can do this for me in one sitting, just by adjusting the water. This is the pinnacle of dialing-it-in. As to the scent, it’s a beautiful aroma, and I can’t eloquently convey all of what Jamestown Gentleman evokes, but I can say there’s a gentle tobacco floral with light powder that’s tempered with a masculine musk. While I enjoy floral scents as much as the next guy, after a while, some of them can get old. That’s not true for Jamestown Gentleman. The scent is quite addictive, and I believe this is due in large part to its complexity. This will probably quickly ascend high on my list of favorite scents.

This stuff is excellent! Cushion and glide are particularly impressive, and the scent is truly refined. I really enjoy powdered tobacco scents, so I was eager to try this soap. It did not disappoint. As a prior reviewer said, this soap can handle plenty of water. As a shower shaver, I appreciate the lather’s stability despite lots of steam. Finally, Wholly Kaw customer service was top notch!

Got this in the tallow version and all I can say is WOW! Great performance and scent, the scent really comes out as you load your brush! I thought The tallow version wouldn’t touch Sri’s donkey milk formula soaps and I can tell you I was wrong, This stuff is great! This is my favourite scent in the Wholly Kaw line up…..so far 🙂

As stated above, the performance of the tallow version of this soap (and, for that matter, the tallow version of all Wholly Kaw soaps, are among the best artisan soaps produced today. Performance aside, Jamestown is an exquisite take on tobacco. I highly recommend this soap.
