What is manjistha?
Rubia cordifolia is a climbing perennial in the Rubiaceae, the coffee and madder family, found across the Himalaya and much of South and East Asia. The part used is the root and the root bark, dried and either powdered or decocted.
Its first identity historically is as a dye. Madder roots have coloured textiles across Asia and Europe for several thousand years, and Rubia cordifolia is the principal South Asian member of that group. Any account of it in skincare has to start from the fact that it is a pigment source.
What is in the root?
A family of anthraquinones, plus their glycosides.

Anthraquinone content varies considerably with age of root, growing conditions, drying and storage. That variability is a genuine problem for anyone formulating with it: two batches of manjistha extract are not necessarily the same material, and commercial extracts are rarely sold against a stated assay.
The glycosides matter for a taila specifically. A glycoside is water soluble and will not move readily into fat by steeping, which is one of the clearer illustrations of why the classical method uses a decoction at all. See how a taila is made.
What does the published research describe?
Very little, topically, and we are not going to inflate it.
The verified work cited below examines quinone derivatives from Rubia cordifolia in the context of topical formulation, and identifies tyrosinase-active compounds in the extract by TLC-MS bioautography. That is close to the whole of the directly relevant, non-disease topical literature that we could verify.
Most of the wider Rubia cordifolia literature sits in oncology and general pharmacology. It is substantial and it is not on this page, for the same reason the equivalent sandalwood work is not: a cosmetic ingredient page that cites cancer research is building an inference it has no right to build.
On the tyrosinase finding specifically, since it is the one most likely to be misused: identifying compounds that show activity against an enzyme in a laboratory assay is a statement about an assay. It is not a statement about pigment in human skin, and the distance between those two things is most of a drug development programme.
Why is it in the kumkumadi formula?
It appears twice in the classical kumkumadi taila formula, in the eleven-botanical decoction and again in the five-botanical paste. That double weighting puts it in the same tier as saffron, licorice and laksha, and above most of the other botanicals in the list.
In the classical framework manjistha belongs to the varnya group, the botanicals associated with complexion, and it is also classed among the raktaprasadana drugs, those associated with the blood. Those are categories from a traditional medical system. We report them as such and we do not translate them into cosmetic claims, because a category in a seventh-century nosology is not a finding.
Does it stain?
Yes, and this is a practical constraint rather than a marketing feature.
It is a dye plant. A manjistha-heavy preparation carries colour, and in a kumkumadi oil that colour sits alongside saffron and laksha, all three of which contribute to the finished shade. The deep red-orange of a traditional kumkumadi taila is largely these three ingredients rather than an added colourant.
For a leave-on product that means the same caution as saffron: it can transiently tint very fair skin and it will mark fabric.
Is it the same as European madder?
Related, not identical. European dyer's madder is Rubia tinctorum, a different species in the same genus, historically the dominant red dye plant of Europe and the source of the original alizarin.
The two overlap in anthraquinone profile but are not interchangeable, and the Ayurvedic literature means Rubia cordifolia. A supplier offering "madder root extract" without a species is offering an unspecified material.

How is the root processed?
The root is lifted, usually from plants of a few years old, washed, and dried. From there it goes one of three ways depending on what it is for.
- Powder (churna). Dried root milled fine. The form used in classical pastes and in most powdered products.
- Decoction (kwatha). Coarse root simmered in water and reduced. This is the form the kumkumadi formula calls for, and it is the one that extracts the water-soluble glycosides.
- Solvent extract. The modern commercial route, usually hydroalcoholic. What it contains depends entirely on the solvent ratio, and this is where the standardisation problem bites hardest.
The three are not interchangeable. An ingredient list saying "Rubia cordifolia root extract" has told you the plant and the part and almost nothing about the material.
What else is it used for?
Textile dyeing, principally, and for far longer than it has been in cosmetics. Madder reds are among the oldest fast dyes in the world, and Rubia cordifolia is the South Asian workhorse of that tradition.
It is also a food and cosmetic colourant in some markets, which is worth flagging for a different reason: in the United States any ingredient used to impart colour to a cosmetic must be an approved colour additive, and madder-derived colours are not on that list. As with saffron, the defensible position is that manjistha in a classical preparation is present for other reasons and colours incidentally. That position should be documented rather than assumed.
Is it safe on skin?
Manjistha is widely used and is not associated with the sensitisation frequency of, say, an aromatic essential oil. Two caveats are worth stating.
Anthraquinones as a chemical class have a mixed toxicological history, largely from the ingestion literature on laxative anthraquinones in other plants, which is a different exposure route and mostly a different set of compounds. Applying that literature to a topical botanical extract would be sloppy, and we are noting it here only because you will see it done.
The more mundane point is standardisation. An extract with unstated anthraquinone content is an unknown quantity, and patch testing is the sensible default with any botanical whose composition varies batch to batch.
