Sesame oil in skincare
Sesame oil is the default base for Ayurvedic tailas. Its fatty acid profile, the lignans that make it stable, the research and the comedogenicity question.
Sesame oil is pressed from Sesamum indicum seed, tila in Sanskrit, and it is the default base oil for Ayurvedic tailas. It is also, unusually for a seed oil, chemically interesting in its own right rather than merely a carrier.

What is the fatty acid profile?
Broadly balanced between one monounsaturate and one polyunsaturate, with a modest saturated fraction.

That roughly even oleic to linoleic split is why it behaves as a middleweight oil: heavier and more occlusive than grapeseed, lighter and less draggy than olive. Exact proportions vary with cultivar and growing conditions, and any single published figure should be read as a range rather than a specification.
What makes sesame oil unusual?
Its lignans, which are close to specific to the plant.
Sesamol, sesamin and sesamolin are phenolic compounds present in sesame seed and, in varying amounts depending on processing, in the pressed oil. They are the reason sesame oil has a reputation for oxidative stability that a polyunsaturate-rich oil has no business having.
Ordinarily an oil that is 35 to 50 per cent linoleic acid would go rancid relatively quickly. Sesame does not, and the lignan fraction is a substantial part of why. Sesamol in particular is a well-characterised phenolic antioxidant.
For a taila this is a practical property rather than a marketing one. The oil is going to be held at temperature for hours during how a taila is made, and an oil that survives that treatment makes a better base than one that does not. Whatever the classical reasoning was, the engineering holds up.
What does the published research describe?
This is the best-covered ingredient in the classical formula after licorice, and the literature is genuinely about skin rather than adjacent to it.
The verified work cited below has examined sesamol in ultraviolet-exposed skin models, examined sesamin in UVA-exposed keratinocytes, examined sesamol in relation to skin barrier proteins through MAPK signalling, examined sesamol and pigmentation in a mouse model, and examined topical sesame oil in a clinical context. Each carries its own title and abstract excerpt so you can read the authors rather than our summary.
The important caveat, and it applies to most of this set: several are cell-culture or animal studies of isolated compounds. Sesamol applied to cultured keratinocytes and sesame oil applied to a human face are not the same experiment, and the presence of a compound in an oil does not mean that oil delivers it at the concentration a study used. We are citing this work as ingredient science, not as evidence about a product.
Is sesame oil comedogenic?
For some people, yes, and this is the question worth answering carefully because the scale everyone quotes is weaker than it looks.
Sesame oil is generally rated as moderately comedogenic, usually somewhere in the middle of a five-point scale. That scale originates in rabbit-ear assays from the 1970s and 1980s, which correlate imperfectly with what happens on human facial skin. It is a rough guide, not a measurement of your pores.
The practical version: if your skin congests easily, patch test a sesame-based oil on a small area for two to three weeks before committing to nightly use over the whole face. Comedogenic response is individual enough that a number on a chart will not predict it for you.
Formulation also changes the answer. A sesame-based oil that has been through a decoction cook is not chemically identical to the raw pressed oil, and dilution, application quantity and what else is in the routine all matter.
Cold pressed, toasted, or refined?
Three different materials sold under one name, and only one of them belongs in a taila.
- Cold pressed, unroasted. Pale gold, mild, and the material Ayurvedic pharmacy means. Retains the most lignan and unsaponifiable content.
- Toasted. Dark, strongly aromatic, made from roasted seed. A culinary product. The roasting develops the flavour and is not what a taila calls for.
- Refined. Neutralised, bleached and deodorised. More stable in some respects and stripped of much of what makes the oil distinctive.
If a product says only "sesame oil" it has not told you which. For a classical preparation the answer should be cold pressed and unroasted.
How does it compare to other carrier oils?

Jojoba beats it on stability and coconut beats it on lightness. What sesame has that neither has is a phenolic fraction that survives a long cook, which is exactly the property a taila needs and no property a modern blend particularly requires. This is a case where the traditional choice is defensible on its own terms rather than because it is traditional.
Why did Ayurveda choose it?
Availability, stability and classification, probably in that order.
Sesame is one of the oldest oilseed crops in South Asia and was abundant where the texts were written. It presses easily, it keeps, and it tolerates prolonged heat. Within the Ayurvedic framework it is classified as warming and penetrating, which is the reasoning the texts themselves give.
In kumkumadi taila it is not a neutral carrier so much as the medium the entire preparation is built around. One kudava of oil, four times that in decoction, twice that in goat milk, all reduced back down into the oil. The oil is what is left at the end, and everything else is what it has absorbed.
Is it safe on skin?
Generally, with one allergen caveat that matters more than it used to.
Sesame is a major food allergen and has been a labelled major allergen in the United States since 2023. That labelling requirement applies to food rather than cosmetics, but the underlying allergy is real and topical sensitisation, while less common than dietary, is documented. If you have a diagnosed sesame allergy, do not use a sesame-based oil on your skin.
Beyond that, sesame oil is a long-established emollient with a benign profile. The usual advice applies: patch test, introduce one new product at a time, and stop if you react.

Some degradation is inevitable with any prolonged heating. The lignan fraction is a substantial part of why sesame tolerates it better than most polyunsaturate-rich oils.
